Easter Saturday at Mahurangi

We are very lucky to be surrounded by the most beautiful regional parks. Today we ventured just 10 minutes north to Mahurangi Regional Park. It has 3 main beaches (2 dog friendly) and what looks to be a few great tracks to explore on a day when we are wearing more than beach shoes!

We spent an hour or so in Sullivan’s bay – the only of the Mahurangi beaches that isn’t dog friendly. The tide was in so it seemed to be a small beach but was busy with families out enjoying the Easter sunshine. In fact. it’s the busiest I’ve seen a beach in New Zealand.

The beach was a home, or at least a pit stop to lots of coastal birds. Mostly different types of gulls and Oyster catchers. There was a tiny sandpiper on the beach too but he was too small to get a photo of.

At one point, Māori lived at Mahurangi in large communities. The park was the ancestral domain of Ngäti Rongo.
