2nd December 2027, the day my youngest son turned 2, I thought it would be a great idea to head over to Arataki for a lovely shady walk. The weather has been very hot this week and so the tall canopy of the waitakere ranges would bring some welcome respite!
How wrong I was.. the crazed mood of my toddler now firmly in the age of the ‘terribles’ set to challenge the calm of this beautiful sub tropical bush.
Still, you can’t see that in the photos 😉
The centre at Arataki is a great spot to visit, lots of activities for little ones on rainy days in the visitor centre and amazing views and walks. The centre is named as the gateway to the Waitakere ranges with more than 16,000 hectares of rainforest and coastline.. stunning views and 250km of walking tracks!!! The Waitakere opens up to the beautiful and rugged Tasman Seanom the west with the black sand beaches of Piha, waterfalls of kerekere and lots more to explore.
For today we stuck to the nature trail.. an easy track that they boys could walk (or scream!!) around.. beautiful bush full of Ponga, full of koru at this time of year, Rimu, Kanuka, Manuka and of course the awesome Kauri.. with incredible bark ‘carvings’.
Love this place!
